I'm surprised they don't have larger fuel tanks for more weight & adhesion. I wonder is GP40s would have too much power in this application and have wheel slipage - one would think more horsepower would rule on this line!

HP helps with speed they were needing to run the grade at 20 MPH, a geep40 would be better, but at 5 mph you can't use the extra power. Fuel tanks may be smaller to provide more clearance if these trains actually get in the pit or run along haul roads.

These motors were originally designed to also work in the pit where there was lots of rocks and mining debris. Note the reinforced steps on the motors as well. I have also read in the past the engines were weighted heavy and geared low, although I can't find anything to confirm that.
