My uncle Roman worked in the Milwaukee Road paint shop in the West Milwaukee Shops of the CMStP&P RR.........he used to say "When in doubt...paint it out." We had loco's that didn't run that had full new paint jobs.....good ole Uncle Roman....may he rest in peace!

New paint and these units were never preserved somewhere. Very sad.

Even worse yet many were simply retired because EMD and GE refused to sell locomotives to any railroad that had FM's on their active rosters. They finally lost an anti-trust suit against ALCO and FM, but by then it was why too late. Just look how many railroad museums have FM's that are still running today over 60 years after all production had ceased. Notice how small the fuel tanks are. The FM;s with the OP engines must have been a lot more efficient. They were ahead of their time.
