It seems that the locomotives are running on the standard (or broad?) gauge and that the freight cars are on the narrow gauge. Am I right? That's wild.

You're right Jean-Marc. VL! commonly uses dual-gauge trains, where the engines have a 1,60m gauge and the wagons have 1,00m. Between them, there is a special kind of wagon, known as "godmoteher" on a free translation from Portuguese.
