I believe that these were test runs for testing the viability of using the new Chargers on long distance trains. As you can see they're Midwest train units. I see them here in Michigan where I live all the time. They're also used in California.

Pretty sure the test run was completed with round trip out of Chicago on Empire Builder route returning to Chicago on either Chief or Zephyr route with a little mix of equipment. Pretty sure this was actual #5 as it was running with standard equipment on exact schedule and noted in Chicago online.

Amtrak has these on loan for testing in real long distance operations before they order their versions. Kind of like test driving a car without all the options you want and then ordering them for your car.
