In 1983 our NRHS chapter was running a fan trip with the 611 from Norfolk to Lynchburg and back. As the 611 arrived in the yard in Norfolk night before the trip, the crown sheet cracked. NS substituted two of the Skunks for the 611 the next day. Some grown men cried when they arrived at the station and there was no 611. Some purists decided not to ride the trip. However, the trip proceeded with the Skunks and all 1,000 passengers had a great time. Rare mileage riding behind the Skunks.
