A wonderful time capsule. After L&N acquired half of the C&EI the southern half of former Monon became redundant.

I was looking on Google maps for Crane, IN because I didn't know where it was, (I knew generally where Bedford is). Just southeast of Crane the map shows a whole bunch of rail lines: (https://www.google.com/maps/@38.8435252,-86.8669505,14z). What is all this (says "Naval Support Activity Crane")? And is it still active?

Why not just go look at the About section of their website, https://www.navsea.navy.mil/Home/Warfare-Centers/NSWC-Crane/Who-We-Are/ "The Crane Division (NSWC Crane), located in Crane, Indiana is a shore command of the U.S. Navy. NSWC Crane is under the Naval Sea Systems Command headquartered in Washington DC. The mission of NSWC Crane is to provide acquisition engineering, in-service engineering and technical support for sensors, electronics, electronic warfare and special warfare weapons. NSWC Crane also works to apply component and system-level product and industrial engineering to surface sensors, strategic systems, special warfare devices and electronic warfare systems, as well as to execute other responsibilities as assigned by the Commander, Naval Surface Warfare Center."

Back in the late 1960's and early 70's the Milwaukee Road would get 20-30 carloads of 750lb.bombs from the base at Crane,IN. daily to be hauled on a Southeastern (CTH&SE) train to Chicago(Bensenville) and placed on train 261 or 263 for the west coast where they were sent to Vietnam......I know of three instances where they were involved in derailments only one at Portage where they exploded......The Milwaukee was very lucky as no one was killed or injured.

@FSWood & Tom Farence Thanks for the story and the website info. I had no knowledge that this operation existed. Is there still as much rail activity as the map would indicate?
