Why the box car there with the power units?

Gene, the boxcar is a Buffer car. Required by the FRA.

That's probably a covered hopper--note the roofwalk and hatches--used as a "buffer" car. BNSF used a buffer car between the engines and DPU on oil trains like this one, at least during the time I lived near the BNSF lines near Galesburg, IL several years ago.
