Great shot, does anyone know what those two dark sections are on the two left most tracks?

I'm going to guess that those are "weigh in motion" track scales, to weigh the mount of coal as the train rolls through. Looks like there is another on the track occupied by the train, 5-6 cars back.

That, or they could just be flange greasers, with some "protective" material that keeps the lube from seeping into the ground (which is blackened by the lube).
