When Philip Anshultz merged the D&RGW with the SP and then, for his own profit, sold that merger to Uncle Pete, it was a very sad day in American Railroading. It is true that the Tennessee Pass is steep and as railroading in Colorado is today, a long way from the real main lines in the state. The pass is, (was), a great relief valve if you will for the Moffit Tunnel. There are many reasons why the pass is more or less abandoned. However, the MAIN reason that the pass is no longer used is because Uncle Pete is afraid that the BN, (BNSF) would take it over. A sad state of airfares never the less and even sadder is the loss of a great American mountain railroad...The Denver and Rio Grande !
