Nice looking loco. What was the purpose of the notch in the nose on the Frisco?

Frisco's diesels had a single Gyralight in the nose - kind of like the red Gyralight on Southern Pacific diesels, but white, and with no headlight below it (as on SP). When removed, the notch is what's left.
