Even though there is a book on a shelf across the room which would say, I'm going to wonder out loud whether that conical fitting on X995's roof is part of a steam generator for steam-heated cars. It is a pretty good bet that 1976 was a date before all stock was equipped with electric heat fed from HEP.

Jean-Marc:  Thank you for the comment.  I do not have any slides of the X996 at this point, but it is a unit I keep an eye out for.
FSWood:  No, the RC4 did not have steam heat generators.  I am not entirely sure what they are for, but AEM7s are equipped with a variant of that hardware.
