Wow! I forgot just how rough some of SP's equipment was looking by this time, just a few years before the UP merger. During this time, SP struggled to have sufficient, reliable power to pull the heavy trains over the pass. They made sure the "oil can" trains had the most reliable power due to their time sensitivity. Generally the tunnel motors were the best of the fleet but this poor fellow looks rough. Nice pic.

"Motley" is so appropriate for this. Even the tunnel motor has the extended "snoot" short hood. Of course, during that very month, hordes of new GE ACs were about to head west from Erie and relieve SP's tired fleet.
