I remember seeing a lot of these as well as the 6 axle GE's on the Portland trains up until the late 1970's after the bankruptcy. Management deemed the Western extension unnecessary, so more of the old power went west. They were still present, but those old, tired units helped aggravate an already bad situation. Sometimes a Portland train had more than 5 and up to 10 GE U-boats lashed together and in their decrepit condition, only a third of them might still be loading before they got to their destination. That meant stalls in the mountains and doubling the hills. The SD40-2's made the Milwaukee look good.
