That is an interesting history. Went and looked up some about Colonel Allensworth and he himself has a really interesting history. Ran away from slavery to join the Union Army after which he was an infantry nurse's aide, though as a civilian. Enlisted in the Union Navy where for a while he was a ship's clerk and the Captain's steward. While later an Army Chaplain he wrote a book titled "Outline of Course of Study, and the Rules Governing Post Schools of Ft. Bayard, N.M." which is said to have become the foundation of US Army practices for educating enlisted personnel. And his promotion to lieutenant colonel in 1906 made him the first black Army officer to have that rank. Pretty cool the connected things you can find out from looking at railroad history!
