"Where is this place?" Good grief, a song comes to mind, 'Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end...' I would 'fan at Kentucky St when the 'shack' was still there, and a great guy named Steve F. would allow my dad and I to get some 'chill time' in the AC on those nasty hot, humid days of summer. He would let us know what was expected and we sure appreciated it! Possibly one of the best places to railfan in all of Tennessee, what with the SLSF, MP, SP, RI, IC, AND the run-thrus. Is it even safe to be there now?? Thank you, sir for the memories as I wipe a tear from my eye for how much it has changed.

Yes, Kentucky Street is fairly safe at least during the day. Just be aware of your surroundings. The apartments in the area are held to high standards and the north side (to the right of the tracks) is currently going through a lot of urban renewal. I have heard numerous times that Kentucky Street is under constant railroad surveillance as part of bridge security if that makes you feel any safer. Power isn’t as diverse as it used to be but there is still plenty from UP, BNSF, CSX, NS, CN, and Amtrak crossing to Union Station.
