323 actually should be dynamic equipped. GP9 numbers 280 - 331 were part of the 1954 order of GP9 with dynamic brakes and 48" fans on the rooftop. Units 279 and lower were the earlier GP9 with 36" fans. A few of those had dynamic brakes. My guess is those earlier dynamic equipped GP9's didn't make it far into the 1970's and most likely went through the GP20 rebuild program where the dynamics were removed and GP20 components installed. The nose would be cut down and cabs modified with Windows in the center. The last unit in the picture should be a GP20 rebuild as evidenced by the Paducah air intake saddling the rooftop. The middle unit puzzles me because the number 9 on the number board would indicate a GP20 rebuild also, but there is no Paducah intake. Most likely it is a torpedo tank passenger GP9 normally used in commuter service. If memory serves me correctly, they were originally numbered 200-208 (approximately) but renumbered 900- 908 because of the SD40-2's that began to arrive about this time, but then again, the SD40-2's were numbered in the 3000 series until about 1974. Very nice image. Always enjoy your photos from this era.
