Was it demoted to Eurocity at that time, or was it still a Trans Europ Express?

Etoile du Nord was created in the summer of 1957 with fast DMUs. The Paris to Brussels line was electrified in 1964 and the train became locomotive-hauled, equipped with the famous CC40100 with stainless steel TEE cars. Its category was changed for IC (InterCity) with 2nd class cars in 1984, then EC (EuroCity) in 1987. The last day was June 1st, 1996 when it was replaced by Thalys TGVs.

To answer your question Jean-Marc the 'Etoil du Nord' commenced running as a named train in 1927. In 1949 it was classed as a Rapide and then first class only TEE in 1957. In June 1984 it became a two-class InterCity and then EuroCity in June 1987 until replaced by an un-named Thalys service on July 9, 1992.
