The abandoned MKT St.Louis line is now the Katy Trail. Local adjacent landowners fought its conversion tooth and nail (some threatening violence to "trespassers") and the case went all the way to the US Supreme Court, where they lost. Within months of the trail's opening, bike rentals, eateries, and B&B's began to flourish all along the trail, and do so to this day.
