Can someone help me with this? I assume it is remotely operated by the cab/engineer. How (and to what) does it apply braking? The locomotive (dynamic?) or a 'section' of the train? It certainly can't do the braking on its' own 4 wheels, right? Thanks!

There's an air compressor inside that container that helps keep pressure up in the brake line on the train.

I've seen these several times on the CN trains that go through my small town. They're not only used in adverse weather, I've seen them on trains with 240+ cars, f which I've seen pass through my town several times. In lieu of a locomotive in the middle or back, they just throw one of these one it.

For sure they get a good combustion economy using this instead of a locomotive
