The blocks of coal in the bunker are 'briquettes' - made of compressed coal dust and quite commonly used on French and Swiss steam locomotives. Note the piles of briquettes in the background of my next photo id http://www.railpictures.net/photo/637899 with a whitewashed line to detect if any are stolen!
