What is that? A filter?

Oh wait, nvm. A piston head, dint notice that a magnet was holding it.

Actually, it's an EMD power assembly. It's bolted to the arm that's holding it in place. Very heavy.

Power assembly is cylinder liner, piston, piston carrier, connecting rod, and head. All assembled and ready to install.

Don't they have to bolt it to the connecting rod? Very interesting. I get the 2 cycle thing but what makes the piston move. Thanks.

Con rod is bolted to the wrist pin that holds the piston carrier in place. The piston on an EMD is free floating, there is a snap ring that allows the piston to be pulled down during startups/barring over.

Thanks Tugboat. That must be what the big access ports on the bottom of the block are for rather then dropping the oil pan to change one. If the rod bearings are good you could just pop in 16 of these and have a new motor.

You have it right Marc. From start to finish a good crew can have one done in about 6 hours. Top hand holes are air box access, bottom ports access the crankcase.
