Eliminating a siding connection on a busy single track mainline? Definitely doesn't seem like a smart thing to do if you want to keep trains moving. What was the purpose for doing so?

It could be the short siding wasn't long enough to accommodate trains of common length. Also, once the railroad had converted it to a stub siding, they parked work trains there, which was more convenient and time-saving than parking them in the town of Tehachapi or down in Caliente.
