"The problem is, that the air twirl in the base tunnel causes loss of some sand...risk damages of the coating and windows." (I shortened my quote.) I wonder if they discovered this the "hard way" or if engineers determined the problem ahead of time during planning.

From my point of view, there were enough practitioners who warned against this. But the responsible persons learned only then on the hard way.

You would think they would cover the sand boxes to keep the sand from twirling and to keep it dry. Here in the USA sand is carried in closed hoppers for that purpose. - Still the engine's color sort of matches the rest of the train. Thanks for sharing the info.
