Two of my favorite railroads in Soda Springs, Idaho, of all places. I grew up a short distance from there, but knew that the Western Pacific & Milwaukee Road would never get to my home town. If I had only known. Life would be very different indeed... A tragic photo, Steve.

My memory of that wreck is that they came off the east leg of the wye, to the east of the location shown on the map.

They don't seem like they were damaged enough to justify scrapping. I take it they were close to being retired anyway?

Maybe I'm seeing things, but it looks like 500 has some twisting to the frame. It looks like her cab end is bowed down. So that would make sense to cut her up where she sits. Not being able to see all the damage to the one behind her, I can't say. The WP loco looks like she might have twisted or bent her frame in the accident as well.
