During my years as a railfan, I've often read that the cause of ALCO smoke was due to turbo lag. I've seen pictures of GEs with similar smoke output. Both ALCO and GE use 4-stroke engines, unlike the 2-stroke engines built by EMD. Makes me wonder . . .
