CURIOUS why MARC is operating a diesel on this run which is completely electrified, unless this trainset is also scheduled for non-electrified routes during its rotation.

Rich: I believe that this has to do with both the rates Amtrak charges other carriers for the use of the overhead catenary, and MARC's desire to rotate equipment through its three lines, Penn, Camden and Potomac Valley. My impression is that the remaining HHP-8 electrics run only during the rush hours; in any case, they will also vanish as new Siemens "Charger" diesels arrive beginning this year.
