You bring up an interesting point to this equipment's operation: it would seem that the rail-bed between closely-spaced crossings would be too short to receive this type of ballast cleaning. (??).

From what I could see during its operation John Simpkins-Camp, it did skip over all grade crossing that it passed. It has 4 large buckets, 2 that scoop the ballast and 2 that lay the cleaned ballast. Two can be seen here, the buckets can be lifted up and down whenever necessary... So I'm guessing the ballast close to the crossings never get cleaned. Unless there's a machine for specifically that, that I haven't seen. Good question John.
