Nice photo! Just imagine the number of employees that worked in this postal car let alone how much the railroad spent building this car and maintaining it. Now all a person has to do to send a message is to pull their cell phone out of their pocket and send a text message.

Mail has changed to where a rather different mail infrastructure is now dominant. But railroads are still involved. For example, from the New York Times, "New Life for Old Railroads; What Better Place to Lay Miles of Fiber Optic Cable, By Jane Tanner, May 6, 2000"

Steve - great photo! Nice capture of history and what used to be a vital part of America, and the delivery of mail. Besides the increase in folks buying the automobile and falling in love with their cars, and Eisenhower creating the vast highways across america, and the improvements in air travel, it was also the Postal Service that helped kill the passenger train. With the advent of the Zip Code, that killed the Railway Post Office Car. 90% of the passenger trains were actually mail trains, and with the advent of the Zip Code, that cut out the reason for mail trains.
