Cool photo! But is it just me or is this beast not at all attractive? I understand the cost savings for using all flat sheet metal components but did EMD throw all of their design style out the window? Note that even the fuel tank is now angled...

I agree espeeboy. Long gone are curves and style.

Also, Isn't there alot of exposed wiring under the frame?

The cables are for data. They are just there for the tests. They run from the cab to the passenger car.

This is from BNSF9838. I think this locomotive Is a one of a kind BEAST! I just CAN'T wait till this thing comes out in HO scale.

There are a lot of exposed wires anyway. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=47051 . It is now out in HO scale - if you want to pay $800 for a brass one from Overland.

It looks like all those wires have been cleaned up in the production version: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=279052 This is an excellent shot. I can almost feel the chill--a place I'd love to visit!

Coming to this conversation 5 years late, those wires may well be for test instrumentation and lead to the following dynamometer/instrument car, to me they kind of have that look and then there's the caption of "GM perfoming high altitude tests on unit."
