I'm surprised that in this day of lawyers and liabilities that people, employee's or not, are allowed to ride standing between the loco and tender. Anybody know if there is strap or something? I'm willing to bet that historical accuracy takes a back seat to safety concerns.

Bradley, I don't think there is as it would be considered a ride able platform, your argument could be made also for riding the steps or porch on a locomotive or car, similar risks but required by the job at times. In the sense of a steamer it's almost impossible not to with the number of crew members they stick in there.

Justin, thanks for your comment. And from a practical standpoint I agree with your reasoning. From a liability stand point, however, I'm surprised it's allowed. In the industry I work in you not allowed to ride on moving equipment regardless of a platform being available, and that's at 5 mph. (for example, on the steps of a moving truck) Don't get me wrong, though. That's where I want to ride!
