Now we all look at this scheme as pure classic. But I wonder if, at that time, was the new scheme accepted, or was it thought of as a cheap imitation of the original?

This was the earliest variant of the new scheme, too. Later the yellow wouldn't extend all the way down the steps, ending instead at the top with blue steps "edged" in yellow for visibility. That, and the later substitution of silver instead of black (or in this case, it appears blue) for the trucks. I didn't notice the yellow steps. And the silver trucks were a definite improvement.
