Oh no, another "rails to trails" forthcoming? The rail properties never return to private buyers through auction or sale. They end up donated for trails.

Is this the same line that DRGW used going from Denver to Salt Lake City? If so, how does UP get between those 2 cities now?

Moffat tunnel route is what the UP uses. This is part of the Tennessee Pass route. It is rail banked so no rails to trails quite yet. I would think the UP will just sit on this line for as long as they need too, just in case.

showalterbj........The line you are thinking of is the Moffat Line which takes the Union Pacific between Denver and SLC......This is the Tennessee Pass line which goes from Pueblo Colorado...to SLC. Union Pacific moth balled the line back in 97 I believe but never officially abandon the line.

Both those lines come together at Dotzero before Glenwood Canyon and Glenwood Springs CO.

There's a persistent rumor that UP simply doesn't want BNSF to get this line. Maybe there is value in having an alternative to the Moffat Route with its many tunnels. Cave-ins are always a possibility.

ya know if you want to. Someone should restart this line as a shortline railroad and interchange with the UP.
