The most amazing thing about this photo is the date....3/28/79. 15 or so miles south of here Three Mile Island had their little "indecent" that started that very day. I remember it well...on 92.7 Starview the DJ said all women and small children should stay inside. Imagine what would have happened if total meltdown would have happened...a complete ghost town.

I didn't realize it when I processed and uploaded this photo, but I remember the day quite well. I was on spring break from College, and on the first day of a five-day railfan trip. As I drove from Bethlehem to Harrisburg, I was bending the energy-crisis-imposed 55 mph speed limit. It seemed that every time that I looked in the rear-view mirror, my heart would sink as another state trooper was closing fast on me. Every one of them blew past me, but I had no idea what was happening. Two of the first things on my itinerary were the Middletown & Hummelstown and the Steelton & Highspire, both within sight of the cooling towers as the nation's biggest nuclear disaster was unfolding. Fortunately, the nuclear plant survived(?), I survived, and I moved through Harrisburg and Enola to capture this image on the Middle Division
