Why put that, or any, diesel in front of a control car? I thought that most of Metrolink trains are very capable of "Push-Pull" operation. (I know that there is an F59PH or something similiar at the other side of the train.)
Wasn't that what those cars were supposed to do?

Safety reasons. The NTSB made Metrolink use a locomotive in front of those Rotem Cab cars after a derailment from hitting a utility truck in Oxnard CA.
