Basket of rocks ? I could understand at the ends to balance but in the middle ?

The rocks sure are interesting, could be to add ballast to the turntable in case the pit floods. Not something that I have ever seen.

As you can see on http://www.railpictures.net/photo/430128/ there is a mechanism on the other side. I think its just the counter weight for that. Felix
