Back in the day on the Milwaukee Road some serious time was made up on passenger trains as they crossed the double track speedway on the island. All the River Division Engineers used to brag about how fast they would go across the island. Hiawatha trains 3 and 2 and Fast Mail train 57 and 56 always seemed to get the most bragging rights. As a young passenger Fireman back in the 60's I would sit in awe listening to the stories in the rooming house lobby in Lacrosse and hoping that one day too I would have the bragging rights. Our fast track east of Lacrosse was Sparta to Tunnel City and Tomah to the Dells. Those old Milwaukee Road Engineers would regularly hit the century mark and above. My fastest on a Milwaukee Road passenger train was 108MPH....I sure do miss those days!
