Even though I understood the financial reality of the Milwaukee's situation, it is sad that the wires had to come down.

The sad part is the Milwaukee's financial situation was basically all about gross mismanagement, not some hopeless situation. Following the BN merger and the opening of traffic gateways long closed to the Milwaukee, the Milwaukee was "having the BN for lunch" (in the words of a retired BN dispatcher), despite the deplorable state of its railroad (thanks to its own management deferring maintenance to inflate profits in advance of a proposed merger with C&NW) until its own management team's continued follies doomed the road to fail. Santa Fe should have merged with the Milwaukee around the time of the BN merger and put the whole railroad under Santa Fe management, and then they probably could have bankrupted the BN before powder river coal ever came along to save it.
