Regarding the comment "when Amtrak was hauling something profitable", we have a program of Michael Portillo in "Great American Railroad Journeys". It is available here on the BBC iplayer, the latest at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b070nlvw/great-american-railroad-journeys-10-wilmington-to-havre-de-grace. In each of the ten, so far programs, I was surprised at how empty the coaches were. The only thing I should point out is, that here in the U.K. we have so many crowded trains it is a major complaint by the travelling public and we still have spend a fortune on subsidies to keep it going.
