An amazing drought photo and a nifty train catch. I have to wonder if this line was relocated to here when the dam was built or has it always been at this location.

I am unsure of the exact details, but yes the line was relocated here for the creation of the reservoir in the 30's or 40's. A Google search of "Shasta Lake railroad realignment" yields some interesting photos of when the bridges were first built before the lake level rose, particularly the Pit River Bridge, showing how incredibly high some of the bridges had to be built to span the valleys.
