Great photo Martin and I love the explanation. I will say that after working for a few tourist railroads / railways here in the U.S. - There would be NO WAY passengers would be ALLOWED to ride the train the way these folks are. That's different - I will give you that.

Thanks for the comment Dana - Interestingly, if it wasn't for the fact that this has been the traditional way to to ride these 'NBH' passenger cars ever since they were introduced in 1919, I would say exactly the same thing about Australia! You certainly couldn't propose to do this anywhere else without safety concerns being raised, but with the practice having gone on so long (without anyone ever falling out that I'm aware of!) it seems a blind eye has been turned. The maximum line speed of 20mph is certainly a factor as well. I can remember as a small child sitting on the windowsill and getting annoyed at my parents for holding onto me so tight! It's a little less comfortable as a grown adult, but still the most enjoyable way to ride the train.
