So it's *not* for rapid commuter unloading? ;)

Nice catch, Steve. At first glance, I thought you were being creative catching the bilevel behind a center-beam flat car. Now you have something to shoot for, lol.

Wow. Defiantly not legal. Reporting marks, car number and required stenciling was painted over. I'll bet this didn't last long. Technically, these cars should be bad ordered and shopped immediately. They appear to be Herzog ballast cars. All it takes is one employee to bring this to attention to ruin this pretty little paint job. Most taggers know this too.

I spy.... Are those reporting marks on the inside of the leftmost side rib, facing to the left?

Mike, they fell under the same rules that apply to friction bearing cars. In this case, long as they did not leave the property (which they didn't, the cars were trans-loaded to carry the ballast) then they were fine. IIRC, they only used these for a very short time, and have since either repainted or scrapped them.

From what I can see the reporting marks are on the A & B end under the top end rail and on the trucks.

Reporting marks are required on both sides and both ends of each car. The markings on the truck are not required and they basically mean nothing. The stenciling on the rib is not reporting marks either. But, as kibu stated, if the cars are captive and not used in interchange service (which is what I think he was referring to), then this would be ok. Thanks kibu for the additional info.

No problem Mike. I couldn't remember what it was called, but yes, they were captive service. To some degree, I believe they still are, though off hand I don't know how many of them are still on the property. The only way I knew about these was in 2007, I painted an HO model of one of the cars, using photos taken by a friend of mine. The car ended up on my friend's layout, where it resides to this day.
