Any idea as to reasoning behind the unusual consist?

We always hear about railroads maintaining slight grades making the branch to the right looking impossibly steep. Nice catch, nicely captured!

There has been rumor of Amtrak trying to run the long-distance western trains with less cars, and maybe less locomotives.

To quote Kevin Morgan re: the size and consist setup... The reason for the lounge in front is to reduce diesel exhaust from entering the coach cars up front. Seasonal ticket sales are down in the winter for the Zephyr thus less cars. Either way It is a shame to see it so small.
