Thanks, Bradley. This guy was flying, but it was the only SCL train during about a 6-7 hour stay at Weems. Still surprised me when decision was made to cut this route. During same time, I saw 5-6 trains on the two Southern lines below the bridge.

Sorry for the sloppy captioning. Of course loco is SCL 2053, and train number is (I think) SCL 217. Corrections have been submitted.

A true travesty of railroading in the south - there simply was no justifiable, long-term beneficial, competitive, strategic reason to do away with the former Seaboard Air Line Atlanta-Birmingham line. As this photo so aptly captures, even back then, traffic was healthy. Now, with all the BNSF Atlanta intermodal business that's routed down the circuitous path via LaGrange, Georgia, this route would be invaluable more than ever!
