Nice catch, Marty. Makes you wonder if the original NS had any steam locomotives on it's roster. I'm guessing perhaps not.

It was a combination of existing roads which no doubt had steam.

On February 1, 1883, the name of the Elizabeth City and Norfolk was changed to the Norfolk Southern Railroad, reflecting the company's ambitions to build further. Yes they had steam engines. My mother rode the passenger train from Norfolk to Virginia Beach many times in the 1930's behind a steam engine.
