This looks like an area whose pictures I've seen before and have always been interested in them. Can anyone tell me what is going on now ? Is it reconstruction of the seawall ?? I hope this crane is temporary for construction. Can't imagine something that ugly being made permanent. Any write-ups appreciated. Nice photo,Robert.

Yes it is reconstruction of the sea wall, due to the results of a February 2014 storm that breached the sea wall that cut the railway (left the tracks suspended) and risked undermining some of the houses that can be seen to the left, between train and sea one can also see the temporary repairs including the use of scrap shipping containers filled with hardcore. The line reopened in early Arpil, see the following link; http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-26062712

The reconstruction of the seawall continues. The next phase is to raise the walkway, where the containers currently sit, to the same level as the other sections. The rig and crane have been brought in to allow work to continue at high tide, a second slightly larger rig is due to arrive in October.

Tom, this was the scene of some major storm damage earlier this year. At one time the track was left suspended in the air. The track base completely washed away. Try the B.B.C. at bbc.co.uk and I think you will find a lot of information there. As I am sure the crane will be on hire and Network Rail will not want it for a day longer than required.

Thanks guys for the explanations. I'd love to see this area but it is a long way from Illinois in the US. I was on a staging with some F-4 Phantoms to Doncaster back in 1982. The UK is a classy place.
