In Hamlet NC they sometimes leave the yard to work Uniman or go south to cross tracks working Trinity car cleaning facility on hwy 177 or cross same road to work an industrial park. Only problem is they work in pairs nose to nose so butt end is always leading.

I would recommend going to Evansville, Indiana. They do work the yard most of the time, but they do sometimes leave the yard to work the local industries along the riverfront, as well as working industries that are further in downtown. All but one of them are MP15s, at least one of them is an SW1500.

Is Hamlet the area where the longest stretch of tangent track is located?

Somewhat east of Hamlet on the line to Wilmington. It is straight horizontally but not vertically, more humps than a herd of camels.

The longest tangent track in the US is on the Wilmington subdivision out of Hamlet, 79 miles beginning at Old Hundred.

If you want to see the MP15s in main line action, Come to Long Island. Both the New York & Atlantic and Long Island RR run them. The NY&A use them in regular freight service along with their GP38s. The LIRR has them in MOW service. Years ago they were used as Cab cars/power packs for push-pull commuter service.
