Back in the steam era, I'm thinking this task used to get done by the worker's skill of the craft.....instead of a modern infra red digital thermometer, they used their hand!

Actually, they used to spit on the bearing. If the spit stayed put you were okay. If it was hot enough to spit back then you had a problem.
