Nice sad mood shot. By the way, what is a "pompadourian tool with a clip board"? Just curious to learn some of New York's local culture.

Well done and well said, Dennis.

Pompadourian! Now that's is what we call a $10 word. I read a lot of Paul Theroux's stuff and not even he has used that one. I like the "tell it as it is" shot, bad weather and also. I am surprised the reviewers took it and I applaud their decision. I do believe I know that L&N gentleman, well...., guy. To say love would be a indulging in hyperbole.

I'm in very dry Texas and I feel wet just from looking at this photo! Way to capture the atmosphere of the location.

Gritty? If it were any grittier it would induce diarrhea! However, I did run into a a guy with an impressive pompadour in the L&N yard at Hazard, KY back in the '60s. Great stuff, Dennis!!!

Love the vintage billboards!

Awesome shot! Lots of atmosphere, and as a bonus for me, my daughter lives near that ConEd generating station with the smokestack! (If any of you saw a video from superstorm Sandy of a ConEd facility that had exploding transformers due to the flooding, this is that facility.)

Jean-Marc and Sid I am pleased you noticed my turn of phrase. My writing style is not surprising given I was weaned off the orchidaceous Lucius Beebe. I would hope the mentor would be pleased by his disciple. The irony is when I was new to RP, I was dumbstruck when presented with the submission form and the enormous space for the caption. Now there is little to stem my loquaciousness.

Jean-Marc, I do hope I do not disappoint but the phrase is my own and not a New York City colloquialism. If you ask Dave H. to back me up, we were at this location recently and were set upon by a local railroad official. As such he was a robot, an android, a TOOL who told us we could not photograph the yard, even from public property. This middle aged person, while not wearing a classic Elvis pompadour, had in the opinion of this hair follicle challenged photographer/writer, entirely too much hair and thus I gave them this pejorative adjective and noun.

I hope I do not put off anyone by my use of such words. I do so mostly for the reason that it is a challenge to find the word and thus it becomes a good brain exercise. Other reasons would be it's fun, it does not hurt anyone and best of all, it's free.

Well said Dennis.

Wow, Dennis, awesome! Do you have any more of this stuff sitting around?

The before and after is quite remarkable - and in a positive way, no less. Glad to see both screener and audience can appreciate a photo such as this. The best photos on the Net are more then just the prettiest.

Dennis, thank you for explaining. I've learnt something about hair styles. By the way, your prose is hilarious!

Here in France, the anti-railfan pompadourian morons are called SUGE (for "SUrveillance GEnérale"), means railroad police. Railfans are an easier target than the usual suspects.

It's such a shame that so much rubbish has been allowed to build up in the area. It adds to the atmosphere, but it also encourages the "it's OK to dump it here" culture. That being said, great picture!

Fantastic shot, Dennis! I'll corroborate your account of being told that we couldn't take photos from a public right-of-way, and add to it that less than an hour later we were carefully observed by an LIRR K9 officer at a nearby platform (which MTA rules allowed us to be on and take photos from) until we moved on to our next adventure...

Just to be abundantly clear and avoid any misunderstanding, that L&N gentleman is indeed a gentleman and he enjoys the affection of most everyone who knows him but we seldom miss a chance to give him grief about something.

"Pompadourian tool with a clipboard" person sounds like some of the people at this Veterans Hospital where I work whom we jokingly and sarcastically call "Klipboard Kommandos". They walk around with a clipboard and try to look as if they are doing something important without actually doing any work at all. The only thing they seem to do is to harass, bother, and annoy the people who are actually doing some real work.

This is totally off topic and apropos only of the VA comment. I call it "Mediwedon'tcare." I realize there are a lot of good people there among the rest.
