Sorry if this is a strange question, but why was so much of ALL's rolling stock so short, compared to its counterparts elsewhere in the Americas?

this railway stretch trains usually have three locomotives EMD SD40-2 or GE C30-7, or 2 GE BB40-2 (Dash 9) pulling 80 freight wagons. It is a narrow gauge railway (metric) the most common in Brazil.
