Talk about a great "period" shot! But I think you'll find EMD 434C was an SD40 prototype, fitted with wide radiators because it was built on the shorter frame of an SD35. Note the short fuel tank, for example. This and similar units went to UP eventually.

You're right, Dave, that's an SD40 demo, not an SD45. No room for the 20 cylinder prime mover on that SD35 frame!
